5 Solid Reasons To Intern In Marketing (Even If You Hate Sales)

By Ryan Kh

Every business needs a marketing department to get found, which means that there are plenty of opportunities to find placement as an internet company in just about every field and industry. Even if you don’t enjoy sales there are some very incredible benefits of being around marketing that you can use later on in your career path.

I say this because one of my first jobs out of school was shadowing/interning the marketing of a small business. Fast forward years later and the skills I learned through the position has touched on all aspects of my life whether it’s job-related or simply communication.

Here are a few reasons why you may want to consider interning in marketing:

1. Learn to market yourself

When you take up the role of marketing you are doing so to promote the business but those very same strategies can be applied to yourself. You learn find and connect with people, sell them on an offer, and build relationships.

Sound familiar?

This is the exact thing that you do when you’re on the hunt for a job or trying to climb the ladder in your career. It’s all about being able to present yourself as having great value to the business.

2. Learn to launch a business

With marketing comes the ability to turn any idea into a viable business. Through an internship in a marketing field, you will gain access to the tools & resources that could later be used when launching a business of your own based on the new-found experience and knowledge you gain from the position.

Success stories of those that started with a simple idea and utilized online marketing can be found all across the Web. For example, inspiration can be found at neilpatel.com. The site discusses a story about a young man by the name of Chandler Bolt who took an idea of helping others with self publishing, tapped into some marketing resources, and managed to build a million dollar business out of it. Once you’re able to understand the basics, you can improve these skills through awesome resources like Neil’s site and learn how other entrepreneurs became successful just like Chandler Bolt.

Find an idea, master marketing, get inspired, and you’ll be on the path to business.

3. Learn to communicate successfully

Marketing is all about the communication; since your duties would be to sell others on products, services, and the brand, you will incorporate those skills in your daily life.

Being able to successfully communicate your ideas and points can lead to success in life such as when negotiating a raise, creating investments, or just being able to listen and make logical decisions effectively.

4. Learn to develop strict habits

You can experiment with marketing but when it comes down to the finer details it’s all about sticking to strict guidelines to ensure the data you’re collecting and working from will have a positive return on investment.

As an intern you will most likely work from scripts which is perfectly fine because it will create great habits that can be used in other jobs and careers. You’ll be accustomed to recording every process, analyzing the results, split testing the strategies, and gathering feedback.

5. Learn something new every day

Some internships will have you settled in after a few days once the basics are covered, but with marketing there is always something new to learn. Think of how quickly the Web evolves; you have to stay one step ahead of it!

You may not care for the sales or even what you’re promoting, but it will certainly give you a great deal of insight into computing, how the Web works, social media, search engines, customer relations, shipping & logistics, network security, content development, and so much more. There are always new strategies to test; conditioning your mind to always seek something new and exciting will keep you aggressive in doing well in your career.
